Ky Markham

Ky Markham is an orphan from the Outer Provinces who was adopted by his aunt Aida Markham and her her husband Patrick Markham when he was 10 years old. He was born Ky Finnow, later taking his adopted parents last name.

Appearance

Ky is good looking, has a tanned skin tone, dark hair and long, black eyelashes. He is six feet tall. His hands are permanently red from the heat of the machines from his work position. Has a unique voice that Cassia describes as "his voice has music". When Cassia first met him he had a faint, red scrape across his cheek. Although Cassia thinks his eye color changes, Ky tells her that they are blue.

Biography

Ky moved to Mapletree Borough with Society approval when he was 10 years old after his mother and father were killed. Due to an unknown infraction that his father committed, he was given aberration status. He tried to run to The Carving after they were killed like his father told him, but a Society airship intercepted him. That is when an Official forced him to take a green pill to make him calm enough so that they could give him a red pill. They gave them a fake story about what happened in the village, blaming everything on the Enemy and stating that not many people died. In the process, his mother's paintbrush that he had with him was broken.

Ky's father taught him to write when he was 5 years old.

His artifact is a gold compass, which only his adopted parents knew about. The compass was the only artifact that Aida and his mother's parents owned and was passed along to them. Aida then gifted it to Ky.

Ky was taught to sort by his uncle Patrick on a scribe that was traded with an Archivist for so that they wouldn't get caught. Patrick traded a page of old writing that Ky's father gave him when Matthew died to for the old scribe.

Xander threatens to turn Ky in for using his compass unless he steals red tablets. Ky stole two red tablets from Xander's parents and they both took them together.

Since leaving the Outer Provinces, he has learned to blend in and not draw notice to himself. He received his work position early and no longer attends second school. Instead, he works in the City at the nutrition disposal center. One day during their hiking activity, Cassia discovers that Ky knows how to write in cursive.

As a belated birthday gift, Ky presents Cassia with a stanza of Poem in October by Dylan Thomas. He traded the scribe Patrick gave him for the poem. They have their first kiss that same day, when Ky kisses Cassia on the cheek. They know that they cannot keep it, so Cassia rips apart the line about the birds and tosses them into the wind. The rest of the poem is buried on the hill.

The following day, while on the Hill, Cassia writes 'I Love You' in the dirt to Ky. Rather than write the words in response to her, Ky speaks the words.

Ky reveals to Cassia that Officials came to him and revealed that his data had accidentally been entered into the Matching pool. They showed him a photo of Cassia and explained to him that she would have been his Match.

Indie believes that Ky is supposed to be the Pilot. Indie tries to get Ky to go after the Rising, but he burns their copy of the map with a match.
